Setting up email delivery with Mailtrap

This guide walks through setting up a Mailtrap connection and using it as a mail account in the Application Platform. Mailtrap is integrated as a dedicated connection type: you just provide an API token, and the platform handles sending, status, and domain monitoring. Alternatively you can still create a generic SMTP account (e.g. for other providers) – see SMTP, IMAP, and related protocols.

The delivery path: your application uses the mail account credential stored on the platform (Mailtrap or SMTP) and talks to Mailtrap; Mailtrap delivers the message to the recipient’s domain.

Steps in Mailtrap

1. Create or open your account at mailtrap.io and sign in.
2. Add a sending domain: enter your sender domain under Sending Domains. Mailtrap shows you the DNS records (SPF, DKIM, DMARC) to set at your domain provider – sending is only enabled after verification. You can also do this step directly from the Application Platform (see below).
3. Generate an API token: under Settings → API Tokens, create and copy a Sending API token.

Creating the connection in the Application Platform

1. Open Connections in the project menu and click Add connection.
2. Choose the Mailtrap tile.
3. Enter your API token and optionally a sender name and sender address for outbound mail.
4. Save – the credential is then available as a mail account in your projects.

Status and domains right inside the platform

Opening the Mailtrap connection tile (under Connections) shows a detail view with:

• Status (connected/error), plan, and sending volume of the Mailtrap account,
• the list of your sending domains with their verification status,
• the DNS records per domain (type, name, value, check status) – the same values you set at your domain provider,
• the option to create new sending domains directly.

This means you no longer need to switch between the Mailtrap dashboard and the platform for ongoing monitoring.

Selecting the mail account in projects

In the project composer / backend settings of a project, the Mail account picker lets you choose either a Mailtrap or an SMTP credential – both connection types appear together in this list.

Troubleshooting

• Status shows an error: check the API token (regenerate it and update the credential if needed).
• Sending rejected / not delivered: sending domain not verified yet – check the DNS records (SPF/DKIM/DMARC) in the connection’s detail view.
• Domain missing from the list: add it via “Add domain” in the detail view and set the displayed DNS records.
